Operation of Non-Contact Sensors A pulse is emitted from the non-contact level sensor's transmitter. The pulse travels to the surface being monitored and is reflected off the surface, back to the sensor. The time of flight is divided by 2 and converted to an output signal directly proportional to the material level. In the case of the ultrasonic sensor, temperature is measured to compensate for the speed variation of the ultrasonic pulse
